Kidderminster BID fund a Vibrant New Mural for Comberton Hill Underpass

Kidderminster BID has worked with artists and students to transform the town’s Comberton Hill underpass.

The BID commissioned female artist duo Chroma Chameleons who worked with Kidderminster College’s Art and Design students to produce the mural.

The result is a colourful Art Deco inspired piece on the walls of the 18m long underpass.

It took three days to transform the underpass which was also whitewashed in advance by Fairmont Decorating.

The mural was funded by Kidderminster BID as part of a plan to improve gateways to the town.

Kidderminster BID Manager Alex Powell said: ‘The Comberton Hill underpass has high footfall. It’s used by visitors and by local people coming into town. We wanted them to have a more vibrant and welcoming experience.

‘We have transformed a dark, unwelcoming gateway to the town into a bright space and have brought art to the community at the same time.
‘We really enjoyed working with the college students. It was fantastic to give them the opportunity to showcase their incredible talents.’

Art and Design Lecturer Sara Hill said: ‘We find working within the Kidderminster BID projects really exciting. It helps our Art and Design learners to engage and be inspired by their local community, whilst giving them the amazing opportunity to work with real-life clients.’

In 2021 Kidderminster BID teamed up with students and artists to transform the Horsefair Underpass in Kidderminster.

The mural was inspired by some of the most important landmarks in this historic area, once famous as the Horse Fair for buying and selling horses.

It includes images inspired by The Old Peacock Inn, The Weavers’ Cottages, The Empire Cinema, Mr Tee Records and Alf Tabb who had a bike workshop in The Horsefair and was famous for engineering and riding the world’s smallest bicycle.
